The Cuban footballers Maykel Reyes and Abel Martínez recently signed contracts in Havana which officially link them to the Mexican football club Cruz Azul.
These are the first professional contracts signed by footballers from the island, a historical event highlighted by the president of themCuban Federation Luis Luis Hernández.
Initially both footballers will play in the subsidiaries of the Mexican team, the attacker Reyes with the Premiers and the defender Martínez with the Hidalgos, with the possibility of making it to the first team.
It is an achievement that a contract like this has been made with such a big team from Mexico. I would like to thank my family who have always stuck by me through the good and the bad and I hope for the best, said Martínez.
For us it is very important to be involved in the league and we hope to set an example so that other team mates can follow in our footsteps and contribute to the development of Cuban football, said Reyes.
The legal representative of Cruz Azul, Cersar Varela explained that it all started in 2013 when both players were part of the Cuban selection that participated in the World sub-20.
Since then they caught our attention and for this very reason we decided to make the effort between two neighboring countries, and we hope that they will succeed in everything proposed to them, he said.
The Hidalgo club belongs to the Second Division whilst the Premier club competes in the same league but without the right to move into the above category. As far as we know both players traveled to Mexico to take on their respective roles and it is possiblenthat Reyes will play more as a wingernthan his original attacker position.Share on FB Share on TT
