The Hotel America, in the central province of Villa Clara, is an important indicator of Cuba´s interest in developing an environmentally friendly and sustainable recreational tourism industry.
<>Nelson Espinosa, director of the Technical Office for the Ozone in Cuba, highlighted the substantial contribution that this Cubanacan Group operated hotel has made regarding the protection of the environment.
The America was recently certified as the first Cuban institution free of ozone harmful substances. The hotel vigorously implements the environmental protection measures laid out by the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) Hotel staff expressed satisfaction at the recognition and at the support they lend to tourism development in Cuba, which hopes to welcome more than three million visitors this year, a figure that would represent a new record for the sector.
Espinosa said that the award constitutes a significant achievement while it is indicative of an increased awareness on the part of provincial and national tourism industry leaders of the need to do away with all substances that are potentially harmful to the planet. The discontinuation of the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by the Hotel America, in Santa Clara’s city center, sets an example of what can be done when the will exists to comply with the United Nations Organization mandate, which in 1995 designated September 16 as World Day for the Conservation of the Ozone Layer.
Cuba has had undeniable successes in the realization of objectives set out by the U.N. and the Montreal Protocol regarding strategies for significant reductions in the emission of noxious substances into the atmosphere through the promotion of alternative technologies.
Among the actions undertaken by this Caribbean island, the expert referred to the elimination of CFC´s in domestic and commercial refrigerators and in pharmaceutical and industrial aerosols, something very few other nations have managed to achieve.
Fire extinguishers in the America hotel contain no contaminants and since 2013 there has been no importation of HCFC´s.
Espinosa reiterated that the Ozone Layer serves as a protective shield against ultraviolet solar radiation and without which life on earth would not be possible. That is why it is vital to limit and eliminate the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) and other substances responsible for its destruction The Hotel America is an ideal destination for travelers who want to visit historical sites such as the Che Guevara Mausoleum or as a point of departure for the idyllic beaches of Cayo Santa Maria. The America has 27 rooms of which 23 are standard and four are matrimonial suites.Share on FB Share on TT
